Why do carbohydrates make up the foundation of the human diet?

Carbs are the main (prefered) energy source for the body and they carry nutrients to cells.Why do carbohydrates make up the foundation of the human diet?
I do not know what it has to do with dieting but carbohydrates is a different form of sugar..that takes a long time to break down unlike the sugar you would find in candy. Seeing as how it takes a long time, it will be giving you energy for a very long time. It is a really great thing when it comes to sports. Right after water.Why do carbohydrates make up the foundation of the human diet?
